The Mussel Monomyth: A Hero's Journey

Join us as we explore the journey of one of our environmental heroes, the freshwater mussel. Our hero can be found in nearly every river and stream system across North America. Though discrete and unassuming, they support our underwater ecosystems and are considered “ecosystem engineers” due to their ability to modify aquatic habitats.

Sometimes our hero may find itself in a situation, not by choice, where it must leave its comfortable habitat (home). Mussel habitat may be disturbed
due to environmental factors (e.g., high flow events, changes in water surface elevation, degraded water quality) or during regular maintenance or construction activities that require drawing down the water level. When these drawdowns occur, it is important to identify what actions are necessary to reduce the impact that the drawdown could have on these sessile aquatic species

We will follow our mussel hero as its habitat is dewatered and see him safely returned home by his mentors (scientists).
